2024 Government of National Unity and its impact on the configuration of local government

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has dismissed suggestions that it has terminated its relationship with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in municipalities across the province. This comes after the Ekurhuleni Mayor and ANC member Doctor Xhakaza fired EFF provincial Chairperson Nkululeko Dunga from his position as the metro’s finance MMC. The ANC and EFF had a mutual working relation in the province and are governing certain municipalities together through coalition. The 2024 National and Provincial elections in South Africa produced a hung parliament.

The ANC with the majority of votes decided to form a GNU and invited all political parties represented in the National Assembly to form part of the GNU. The party has joined forces with the DA, IFP, PA and GODD , in Parliament and in the province. This move some believe it was an indication that the working relationship between the EFF and the ANC is over in the province. At a media briefing on Friday, ANC provincial secretary TK Nciza dispelled the notion.  “We will try and engage with the Economic Freedom Fighters on those issues and see if we can’t find each other. If they’ve got a stance in how they want to move forward, we’ll respect that.”

However, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says if the African National Congress (ANC) in the Ekurhuleni Metro does not reinstate Nkululeko Dunga as the MMC of finance then they will pull out of all local government coalitions with the ANC across the country.
