Thabazimbi local municipality placed under administration

The provincial government in Limpopo has resolved to place the troubled and strained Thabazimbi Local Municipality under administration. The provincial government invoked Section 139(1)(c) of the constitution to address the municipality’s challenges. According to the province, this decision was taken after a “detailed report to the executive council, which highlighted ongoing governance and management problems in Thabazimbi Local Municipality since 2022.” Thabazimbi is one of the two local municipalities in the province under coalition government. However, “Thabazimbi Council has been given seven days from August 15 to explain why the provisions of Section 139 should not be implemented.” On the other hand, the mayor, Tokkie Swanepoel, has accused the ANC-led government in the province of trying to use Section 139 to seize control of the municipality.
