The Electoral Commission of South Africa has announced that by-elections for Thabazimbi Local Municipality will take place on December 4, 2024. This decision follows the provincial government’s resolution to dissolve the municipality due to ongoing political and administrative turmoil. The municipality has been plagued by a leadership crisis, with conflicting claims of legitimacy from two mayors and two municipal managers, leading to significant disruptions in service delivery.
As a result of these issues, service providers have gone unpaid, and municipal workers have also faced delays in receiving their salaries. With the by-elections approaching, residents of Thabazimbi have a chance to influence the future of their municipality. Various political parties and independent candidates are actively campaigning to gain support in this critical election, aiming to restore effective governance and service delivery to the community.
