Mogale city elects a new mayor

On October 25, 2024, Councillor Lucky Sele was elected as the new mayor of Mogale City during the 39th Special Council Meeting in the West Rand. His election follows the resignation of former mayor Danny Thupane on October 16, 2024, who stepped down at the request of the African National Congress (ANC). This move is part of the ANC’s strategy to reclaim leadership in hung municipalities where they hold a majority of seats, in line with their belief that the majority party should lead coalitions in local governance.

Councillor Sele secured his position with 43 votes in a secret ballot, defeating the Democratic Alliance’s Alderman Tyrone Gray, who received 25 votes, and Freedom Front Plus’s Councillor Tjaart Steenkamp, who garnered 5 votes. Following Sele’s election, Dorren David (from the ANC) was appointed as the new speaker of the council, succeeding him. David previously served as the Finance Member of the Mayoral Committee. Mayor Lucky Sele has appointed his mayoral committee with representatives from both the ANC and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). This decision reflects the ongoing collaboration between the two parties in Gauteng province, aiming to strengthen their alliance and enhance governance. In his new role, Mayor Sele has emphasized the need for collaboration within his mayoral committee to enhance service delivery across the municipality.
