The municipality lies in the uThukela Water Management Area, with the Tugela River as a key water source. It focuses on environmental sustainability, including a waste recycling plant to create jobs. The municipality is also committed to planting trees to reduce gas emissions.
The council has 73 seats with 8 political parties represented. The IFP is a leading party with 33 seats but falls short of the requisite 37 to govern alone. The current coalition is made of the IFP and DA totalling 36 seats, with the support of the EFF.
The council was constituted on November 2021 without changes.
