The municipality – situated in the Western Cape along the N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Beaufort West is a town in the Western Cape province in South Africa.

Beaufort West is the largest town in the arid Great Karoo region, and is known as the “Capital of the Karoo”. It forms part of the Beaufort West Local Municipality. It is said to be one of the oldest municipalities in South Africa. There are two spheres of governance within Beaufort West Municipality: Council, which is political in nature and representative of the people who have elected them, and Administration, which are employed by the Municipality as the executors of decisions taken by Council.

Council makes decisions in terms of legislation, by-laws and policies, as well as in terms of executive functions such as operations, projects and issues of finance. The Executive Mayor is the executive and political leader of the Municipality. Composition of Council: ANC 4, DA 4, PA 3, GOOD 1, KDF 1.

Historical Timeline

As the Executive Mayor, I have a responsibility to ensure that I take the lead in the delivery of basic services to all our communities. The Community of Beaufort West Municipality must be in a position to reflect and indeed be able to measure the impact that the municipality has had on improving their quality of life.
As the Speaker, my key role in the municipality is ensure oversight, accountability, integrity, discipline of office, and the efficient running of Council meetings. I shall ensure that the Beaufort West Council meets at least on a quarterly basis. My duties and functions as Speaker entail the following: Chair of Council meetings; Implementation of the Code of Conduct for Councillors; Exercise of delegated
