Beaufort West is the largest town in the arid Great Karoo region, and is known as the “Capital of the Karoo”. It forms part of the Beaufort West Local Municipality. It is said to be one of the oldest municipalities in South Africa. There are two spheres of governance within Beaufort West Municipality: Council, which is political in nature and representative of the people who have elected them, and Administration, which are employed by the Municipality as the executors of decisions taken by Council.
