Bitou Local Municipality is part of Garden Route District Municipality. Description: The Bitou Local Municipality is a Category B municipality located in the far east of the Garden Route District in the Western Cape Province.

It is bordered in the north by George Local Municipality, in the south by the Indian Ocean, in the east by the Eastern Cape Province, and in the west by Knysna Local Municipality. It is the smallest municipality of the seven that make up the district, accounting for only 4% of its geographical area.

The municipality’s main Economic Sectors are: Wholesale and retail trade, catering and accommodation (29.4%), finance, insurance, real estate and business services (22.7%), manufacturing (15.1%), construction (11.9%), transport, storage and communication (5.8%), general government (5.1%), community, social and personal services (4.7%), agriculture, forestry and fishing (4.3%)

Historical Timeline

The Executive Mayor is at the centre of the governance system and is responsible for providing political and strategic leadership. Executive power is vested in the Executive Mayor, in accordance with a framework of powers assigned by legislation as well as powers delegated by the Municipal Council in terms of Section 59 of the Municipal Systems Act. In order to maximise operational efficiency, the Municipal Council has delegated all powers except those which it is may not delegate by law to the Executive Mayor. The Executive Mayoral Committee is chaired by the Executive Mayor and includes the Deputy Mayor and the Portfolio Committee Chairs.
The Speaker is the Chairperson of the Municipal Council and performs his/ her functions in terms of a framework of powers assigned by legislation and powers delegated by the Municipal Council in terms of the Municipal Systems Act.
