Cape Agulhas municipality is a category B (local) municipality situated within the Overberg District. Cape Agulhas Municipality is the southernmost municipality in Africa

Its coastline is surrounded by the Atlantic and Indian oceans which meet at the most southern town in Africa, namely L’Agulhas.Cape Agulhas has a gradually curving coastline with rocky and sand beaches. A survey marker and a new marker depicting the African continent are located at the most Southern tip of Africa. The waters of the Agulhas off the coast are quite shallow and are renowned as one of the best fishing grounds in South Africa

General Information

The Municipal Area covers approximately 2411km² and includes the towns of Bredasdorp and Napier, the coastal towns of Arniston, Struisbaai, L’Agulhas and Suiderstrand and the rural settlements of Protem and Klipdale. It also includes Elim which is a private town and a vast rural area. The administrative seat of the Municipality is in Bredasdorp.

Historical Timeline

The Executive Mayor is the centre of the governance system and is responsible for providing political and strategic leadership. Executive power is vested in the Executive Mayor, in accordance with a framework of powers assigned by legislation and powers delegated by the Municipal Council in terms of the Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000. In order to maximise operational efficiency, the Municipal Council has delegated all powers except those which it may not delegate by law to the Executive Mayor. The Executive Mayor is assisted by the Mayoral Committee. The Mayoral Committee is chaired by the Executive Mayor and comprises the Deputy Mayor and one full time Councillor.
As the Speaker, my key role in the municipality is ensure oversight, accountability, integrity, discipline of office, and the efficient running of Council meetings. The Municipal Council is chaired by the Speaker who is required to ensure that the Council meets at least quarterly and that council meetings are conducted in accordance with the rules and orders of the council. The Speaker is responsible for the application of the Councillors Code of Conduct as well as public participation and the functioning of ward committees.
