Changes of Mayors

The Cederberg Local Municipality is a Category B municipality located in the West Coast District along the upper west coast of the Western Cape Province, approximately 200km from Cape Town.

The municipal area is bordered by the spectacular Cederberg Mountains in the east and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is one of five municipalities in the district.It is strategically located on the Cape-Namibia Corridor, and the N7 National Road links it with the Northern Cape. If this corridor was identified for future infrastructure upgrades and investments, it would be of paramount importance to ensure that the very basic infrastructure is in place to facilitate future development, whilst simultaneously planning for future growth.

General Information

The Cederberg region is only two hours from Cape Town and yet the landscape is completely different: wilder, warmer with a raw, dramatic beauty. Clanwilliam and Citrusdal with its towering mountains, brilliant purple and orange sunsets, laden with the scent of orange blossom in the spring. Main Economic Sectors: Agriculture, forestry and fishing (25.7%), wholesale and retail trade, catering and accommodation (17.3%), finance, insurance, real estate and business services (15.3%), manufacturing (12.8%), general government (9.8%), transport, storage and communication (6.9%), community, social and personal services (6.2%), construction (5.1%)

There are about five political parties represented in council, with an overall 11 seats. The ANC is the leading party with about 4 seats, the CE with 3 and DA party with 2 seats, while the AP and FF Plus have single seats respectively.

Historical Timeline

As the Executive Mayor, I have a responsibility to ensure that I take the lead in the delivery of basic services to all our communities. The Community of Cederberg Municipality must be in a position to reflect and indeed be able to measure the impact that the municipality has had on improving their quality of life. My duties amongst others as Executive Mayor include the following: Opening projects, civic functions, special events and new buildings, Hosting and welcoming dignitaries to the municipality, Advocating Council policy.
As the Speaker, my key role in the municipality is ensure oversight, accountability, integrity, discipline of office, and the efficient running of Council meetings. As Speaker, I ensure that the Cederberg Council meets at least on a quarterly basis. My duties and functions as Speaker entail the following: Chair of Council meetings, Implementation of the Code of Conduct, Exercise of delegated functioning including: facilitating public participation in legislation matters establishment and functioning of ward committees provide support to councillors.
