The municipal area is bordered by the spectacular Cederberg Mountains in the east and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is one of five municipalities in the district. It is strategically located on the Cape-Namibia Corridor, and the N7 National Road links it with the Northern Cape.
The council has 11 seats with 4 political parties and 1 civic movement represented. The ANC is a leading party with 4 seats but falls short of the requisite 06 to govern alone. The current coalition is made up of the ANC and CE totalling 7 seats.
The council was constituted on November 2021 with three changes.
