The municipal area is bordered by the spectacular Cederberg Mountains in the east and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is one of five municipalities in the district. It is strategically located on the Cape-Namibia Corridor, and the N7 National Road links it with the Northern Cape.
The council has 11 seats with 4 political parties and 1 civic movement represented. The CE and DA are the leading parties with 4 seats each but both fall short of the requisite 6 to govern alone. The current coalition is made up of the CE,FF+ and the ANC, totalling 6 seats, with voting support from the PA.
The council was constituted on November 2021 with three changes.
