The eThekwini Metropolitan area in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and is the third largest metropolitan municipality in the country, with an estimated population around 3.1 million. eThekwini is the economic hub of KZN with a provincial GDP contribution of 59.88% or R468 billion. Since the 2021 local government elections, eThekwini has been governed by the ANC-led coalition.
The Council has 222 seats, which means that 112 seats are required to govern. There are 24 political parties represented in council, the ANC leads with 96, followed by the DA with 59, EFF with 24 and IFP with 16.
EThekwini metro has seen a politically stable council with regards to the consistency of the Mayor and Speaker. The one mayoral change recorded is as a result of Cllr. Kaunda being deployed to the National Council of Provinces after the 29 May 2024 national and provincial elections.
