The eThekwini Metropolitan area in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and is the third largest metropolitan municipality in the country. The eThekwini is the economic hub of KZN with a provincial GDP contribution of 59.88% or R468 billion. The city is well known for its busiest port and one of the tourist leading domestic destination in South Africa.
Composition of Council
The City of eThekwini has 222 seats, with 10 political parties represented in council. The ANC is a leading party with 96 seats but falls short of the requisite 112 to govern. Followed by the DA 58, EFF 24, IFP 17, ACTIONSA 4, ABC 2, ACC 2, ACDP 2, AIC 2, ADEC 1, ALJAMA 1, APF 1, ATM 1, DLC 1, JEP 1, KZNI 1, MF 1, MOSA 1, NFP 1, PFP 1, PRM 1, TA 1, UIM 1, VF PLUS 1. The current coalition is made up of ANC, EFF and NFP.
