The Govan Mbeki Local Municipality is situated in the Gert Sibande District in the Mpumalanga Province.

The municipality is one of the smallest of seven municipalities that make up the district, accounting for 9% of its geographical area. Secunda is the seat of the municipality, as well as the seat of the district municipality. The municipality’ s economic activities are mining, manufacturing, trade and construction.

Composition of Council

The council has 63 seats and seven political parties represented. The ANC is the leading party with 26 seats but falls short of the requisite 32 to govern alone. The current coalition is made up of the ANC, EFF and ATM totalling 40 seats.
