Mtubatuba Municipality is one of five Category B Municipalities within the Umkhanyakude District Municipality.

Mtubatuba Municipality, located in the North-East of KwaZulu-Natal, is bordered by the Mfolozi River to the South and the ocean to the East. It is strategically positioned along the N2, connecting to key areas like Richards Bay, eThekwini, Mpumalanga, and neighboring SADC countries. To the North, it borders the Big Five False Bay Municipality, while Hlabisa Municipality and Hluhluwe–Umfolozi Park lie to the West.

The council has about 45 seats with 8 political parties 1 independent represented. The IFP is a leading party with 19 seats but falls short of the requisite 23 to govern alone. The current coalition is made up of the ANC and EFF totalling 23 seats.
