Changes of Mayors

Kannaland Municipality is a local municipality located within the Eden District Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

The municipality covers an area of 4 758 square kilometres in the Little Karoo,
stretching from the Swartberg in the north to the Langeberg in the south, and from
the Anysberg in the west to the Gamkaberg in the east. It is drained by the Groot
River and the Gourits River. It abuts on the Laingsburg and Prince Albert
municipalities to the north, the Oudtshoorn Municipality to the east, the Hessequa
Municipality to the south and the Swellendam and Langeberg Municipalities to the
west.

General Information

The 2021 Local Government Elections again produced a hung council in Kannaland Municipality, prompting the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (ICOSA) and the ANC to form a grand coalition (collectively controlling five of the seven seats in the council) led by ICOSA. The DA and the Karoo Independent Party (KIP) each held one seat in the council.

Historical Timeline

As the Executive Mayor, I have a responsibility to ensure that I take the lead in the delivery of basic services to all our communities. The Community of Kannaland Municipality must be in a position to reflect and indeed be able to measure the impact that the municipality has had on improving their quality of life. In terms of legislation, my role of Executive Mayor includes the following functions: -Identify needs of the Municipality and Review and evaluate these needs in order of priority amongst others.
As the Speaker, my key role in the municipality is to ensure oversight, accountability, integrity, discipline of office, and the efficient running of Council meetings. Chair of Council meetings Implementation of the Code of Conduct, Exercise of delegated functioning including: facilitating public participation in legislation matters, establishment and functioning of ward committees, provide support to councillors
