Lekwa Local Municipality is a Category B municipality, sharing executive and legislative authority with the Gert Sibande District Municipality (Category C). Located in the highveld region, it is bordered by Govan Mbeki to the north, Pixley Ka Isaka Seme and Msukaligwa to the east, and Dipaleseng to the west.
The council has 30 seats in the council 4 political parties and 1 civic movement represented. The ANC is a leading party with 13 seats but falls short of the requisite 14 to govern alone. The current coalition is made up of the ANC and EFF totalling 16 seats.
The council was constituted on November 2021 with a single change.
