The municipality is one of five municipalities in the district. It was established by the amalgamation of the Mookgophong and Modimolle Local Municipalities in August 2016. The municipality occupies a strategic position from the main markets of the country by being at the south entrance of the province.
The council has 28 seats with four political parties represented in council. The ANC is a leading party with 28 seats but falls short of the requisite 15 to govern alone. The current coalition is made up of ANC and EFF totalling 18 seats.
The council was constituted on November 2024 with a single changes.
