Msunduzi Municipality is the smallest of the seven municipalities in the district, encompassing the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal. Located on the N3 highway, it serves as a key intersection for industrial and agro-industrial corridors, linking Durban to Pietermaritzburg and extending to Estcourt.
The council has about 81 seats with 9 political parties and 1 Independent represented. The ANC is a leading party with 40 seats but falls short of the requisite 41 to govern alone. The current coalition is made up of the ANC and IND totalling 41 seats.
The council was constituted on November 2021 with no changes.
