The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, established on 5 December 2000, is a Category A municipality. Located on the south-eastern coast of Africa, it is a key seaport and automotive manufacturing hub. As the economic powerhouse of the Eastern Cape Province, it is one of South Africa’s eight metropolitan areas.

The council has 120 seats with 13 political parties represented in council. The ANC is leading party with 48 seats but falls short of the requisite 61 to govern alone. The current coalition is made up of ANC,EFF,NA,AIC and PAC totalling 61 seats.
