The City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is a Category A municipality. Ekurhuleni is the industrial hub of South Africa with many of the factories for production of goods and commodities located in city, often referred to as ‘Africa's Workshop.

The City of Ekurhuleni is one of three metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng province. The city is known as the industrial hub, economy is dominated by Manufacturing, Finance & Business Services, and Community Services & Government Services and to some extent Hospitality. The city is interconnected and located to the North of South Africa’s economic capital (The City of Johannesburg) and South East of South Africa’s political capital (Tshwane City).

Composition of Council

The City of Ekurhuleni has 224 seats in its council, with seventeen political parties represented in council. The ANC is a leading party with 86 seats but falls short of the requisite 113 to govern. The ANC is followed by the DA with 65, EFF 31, ACTIONSA 15, VF PLUS 8, PA 4, AIC 3, IFP 3, ACDP 2, ATM 1, COPE 1, ICM 1, IRASA 1, NFP 1, PAC 1, UDM 1. The current coalition is made up of ANC, EFF, ActionSA, and PA.
