It is the largest municipality of six in the district, making up a third of its geographical area. It has its centre in Calvinia, which is approximately 400km from Cape Town, Springbok, Upington and Beaufort West. A Numerous government departments are also situated in Calvinia.
The council has 13 seats with 5 political parties represented in council. The ANC is the leading party with 6 seats but falls short of the requisite 7 to govern alone. Following the by elections held on the 18 December 2024, the ANC has the outright majority and this municipality is no longer under coalition government.
The council was constituted on November 2024 with no changes.
