A reconfiguration of the city of Johannesburg’s leadership

On Friday, August 16, 2024, the city of Johannesburg elected a new mayor, Dada Morero, of the African National Congress (ANC). He is succeeding Kabelo Gwamanda of Al Jamaah. Mayor Morero is not a stranger to the City of Johannesburg, since he previously served as mayor for just 25 days in 2022, and upon his re-election, he was serving as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for finance. Mayor Morero received 189 votes, while the DA’s Belinda Kayser- Echeozonjoku, who also contested the position of mayor, received 60 votes from her caucus. Soon after his re-election, the speaker of council, Margaret Arnolds, from the African Independent Congress (AIC), resigned her position as speaker in order to accommodate the demands of the new coalition partners, ActionSA. Mayor Morero reconfigured his mayoral committee and appointed his predecessor, Kabelo Gwamanda, as MMC for Community Development, while the former speaker, Councillor Margaret Arnolds, was appointed MMC for Finance. A speaker’s position is currently vacant, and a new speaker is expected to be elected this week, coming from ActionSA.
