Executive Mayor Cilliers Brink has been removed from his position in the City of Tshwane following a successful motion of no confidence led by the African National Congress (ANC). Initially, the ANC had withdrawn its motion back in August, reportedly due to insufficient support from other parties in the council. However, recent developments, including the establishment of the Local Government of Unity (LGU) following the formation of a National Government of Unity (GNU), have strengthened the ANC’s coalition-building efforts. The ANC’s ability to reclaim leadership in Gauteng’s metropolitan municipalities is bolstered by proposed legislation that advocates for the party with the majority of votes to lead the council. The recent withdrawal of ActionSA from the Multi-Party Charter coalition, previously led by the Democratic Alliance (DA), created a favorable environment for the ANC to navigate and consolidate support for its motion. ActionSA’s criticisms of the DA-led coalition, specifically regarding alleged neglect in service delivery to townships around Pretoria, have further fueled the ANC’s narrative. This political shift may herald a significant change in governance and service delivery dynamics within the metropolitan area, as the ANC positions itself as a leader in coalition governance across Gauteng.
