Knysna Mayor Aubrey Tsengwa was removed from office during a special council meeting held on Friday, 14th February 2025, through a motion of no confidence. The motion was tabled by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and seconded by the Knysna Independent Movement. This action followed an investigation by the Western Cape provincial department of local government into alleged irregularities in the appointments of staff for the mayor, deputy mayor, and the Speaker. The matter was also addressed in the High Court, which ruled that the appointments were illegal, leading to the removal of the affected employees. Additionally, the motion of no confidence was fuelled by concerns over poor service delivery and the inadequate maintenance of municipal infrastructure.
