KwaDukuza Municipality elects new mayor and deputy

The election of the African National Congress (ANC)’s new mayor (Muzi Nene) and deputy mayor (Njabulo Cele) in the municipality during the special council sitting on October 5, 2024, marks a significant step in restoring political stability. This comes after the post of the deputy mayor remained vacant for three months and following the removal of the former mayor. The former mayor’s removal was due to a motion of no confidence, with accusations that she contributed to division and disunity within the council and failed to adhere to ANC directives.

The shift in leadership, particularly with new executive appointments, is part of a broader trend occurring in various municipalities across South Africa. Political parties are making efforts to strengthen governance structures in the lead-up to the 2026 local government elections. The appointment of the new mayor and deputy mayor is hoped to usher in a period of greater political cohesion in the council.
