In the previous by-elections, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was the biggest winner as it managed to take three wards off the ANC in the Newcastle municipality. The party managed to strengthen and consolidate power in the municipality which is currently under coalition government. However, Team Sugar South Africa (TSSA) having fallen out with the IFP and joined forces with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African National Congress (ANC). The shift of the TSSA might have significant impact on the power dynamics within the municipality and the likelihood of a new coalition depending on whether which political party will win those wars which will be contested.
