The Independent Electoral Commission publicises by-elections and candidate nominations across South Africa.

The IEC has published the by-election candidate nominations for the upcoming by-elections in different provinces and municipalities across South Africa. The outcomes of these by-elections might have a serious impact on the configurations of municipal and metropolitan councils, especially those that are governed through coalitions. In the recent by-elections in the Beaufort West local municipality, which was governed under a coalition government, the Democratic Alliance snatched wards from both the Patriotic Alliance and the African National Congress to have an outright majority in the municipality. The municipality is no longer under a coalition but under single-party governance. The nominations for potential candidates closed yesterday.
