The Knysna Municipality is a Category B municipality located in the Garden Route District of the Western Cape.

The area comprises 11 wards with a population of 96 055 and a total of 1059 km² that stretches from Swartvlei in Sedgefield in the West to Brackenhill in the East. It is about 300km stretch of coastline from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east gets its name from the area’s ecologically diverse range of topography, terrain, vegetation and wildlife.

General Information

It is one of the smallest municipalities of the seven that make up the Garden Route district, accounting for only 5% of its geographical area. It has however the fourth largest economy in the Garden Route District and boasts good infrastructure and basic services. Adjacent municipalities include George Local Municipality to the north-west and Bitou Local Municipality to the east.

Historical Timeline

The Mayor is the head of local government in Greater Knysna. He is elected by Council every five years and has statutory powers and functions. The Mayor’s main role is to identify the needs of the municipality, and recommend ways to realise those needs by means of the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan and budget. He must also monitor the administration, review the performance of the municipality and oversee service delivery.
The Speaker is also responsible to ensure that council meets at least quarterly; compliance in the council and council committees with the Code of Conduct; that council meetings are conducted in accordance with the rules and orders of the council; that the legislative authority of the municipality functions effectively; the effectiveness of the committees of the municipal council; the effectiveness and functionality of ward committees and the public participation processes.
