Matzikama Local Municipality, located in the northernmost part of the Western Cape, is the largest of the five municipalities in the West Coast District. Known as the “place of water,” it offers a range of attractions, including the renowned wines of the West Coast Winelands and the stunning flowers of southern Namaqualand.
The council has 15 seats with 6 political parties represented . The DA is a leading party with 7 seats but falls short of the requisite 08 to govern alone. The current coalition is made up of the DA and FF+ totalling 08 seats.
The council was constituted on November 2021 but collapsed in June 2025 when a DA councillor voted against, and was expelled from the DA. The municipality was briefly controlled by a PA, ANC, Good, EFF bloc, but the DA and FF+ coalition was reinstated following a ruling by the The Western Cape High Court, which declared the opposition coalition’s takeover unconstitutional, The DA/FF+ coalition subsequently regained numerical control following a DA win in the August 2025 by-election held to replace the vacated seat of the formally DA councillor.
