The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) facilitated a registration weekend on the 04th and 5th of October 2024, wherein voters will have the opportunity to participate in a critical election on November 20, following the recent resignation of a ward councillor in Matzikama municipality. The outcome of this by-election is of particular significant as it could potentially reshape the coalition landscape in the municipality, much like previous by-elections that have led to changes in party alliances and governance structures.
Notably, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has recently capitalised on similar opportunities, securing outright majority at Beaufort West Local Municipality in province which was previously under coalition governance. Voter turnout will be crucial in determining whether the ANC-led coalition government can retain control or whether the DA and other parties can leverage this vacancy to shift the balance of power. Given the volatile nature of local politics in the region, all eyes will be on the Matzikama Municipality as the by-elections approach.
